Real GED credentials cannot be earned through correspondence courses or on the Internet. The General Educational Development Testing Service (GEDTS) has received complaints from students who paid high fees to take fake GED tests and who had not earned the credential accepted by hiring personnel, college admissions officers and military enlistment personnel. Real GED tests can be taken only in person at official GED testing centers.

The General Education Development (GED) is a free program that opens the door to the future. Earning a GED means greater employment opportunities and increased self-esteem. In today's employment market, many employers require a high school diploma. Most higher education institutions such as the University of Maine (at Augusta and other branches) and the community college system accept the GED for admission!

What is it? The GED is a series of five exams that, when taken successfully, allow the State of Maine and the local school to issue a GED diploma, which is the legal equivalent of a high school diploma. The five tests are in:
        •       Writing  (Part 1-50 questions, 75 minutes   Part 2-Essay, 45 minutes)
                        15% Organization
                        30% Sentence Structure
                         30% Usage
                        25% Mechanics
        •       Social Studies (50 questions, 70 minutes)
                        15 % History
                         30% Geography
                        30% Civics and Government
                        25% Economics
        •       Science (50 questions, 80 minutes)
                        45% Life Sciences
                        20% Earth and Space Science
                        35% Physical Science
        •       Language Arts, Reading (40 questions, 60 minutes)
                        20% Comprehension
                        15% Application
                        30-35% Analysis
                        30-35% Synthesis
         •       Math  (50 questions, 90 minutes)

Deb Bomaster, director of Maranacook Adult & Community Education, is the Adult Basic Education Coordinator and  works with students to complete their GEDs. Pre-GED tests, preparation programs and GED testing are available at no cost to the student. The class is offered on an ongoing basis during the school year except during vacations. Students may register at any time. Check our online catalog for start dates and descriptions of courses.
